NOTES TO 8TH GRADE – SCIENCE DEPARTMENT MEETING  – February 9, 2012

Full labs that require students to develop their own hypothesis, variable etc are too long, confusing & do not work.  “Cook book” step by step labs don’t have enough instructional  impact to be worth the time investment.

Therefore

–        labs need to be short (20 minutes) and powerfully reinforce the concept covered.

–        Or, demo labs with explicitly break down the concepts covered & include student participation in as many of the steps as possible.

Other instructional practice that will lead to student mastery of the material:

–        Repetition of bedrock concepts; especially “fair game” Grade 5 content

–        Vocabulary – Using games, digital (phone apps) flashcards, bingo

–        Formative assessment – short quizzes & quick turnaround of feedback

–        Homework – students need to be part of this process and involved in improving their knowledge and skills.

–        FCAT Notebooks – Keeping track of the work that has been accomplished- student accountability

–        Adjust lessons to accommodate learning modalities on a small group basis as much as possible (visual, auditory…)

–        Tie-Ins to real world experience the kids have had – example parallax & RPG shooter games

–        EXTENSIVE Practice running scenarios of experimental design – give small groups variations of an experiment to ID tested variable, Measured variables, controls, bias,… & have each group present using the smartboard – with peer evaluation.

We need a Saturday professional development day (with a stipend?) to develop:

Vocabulary games

Powerful mini-labs /Adaptation of Essential labs

Demo Labs

Experimental Design Scenarios

Accommodations to modalities

Calendar & synchronization to Coach Frame

Positive reinforcement budget – Baked goods for weekly scores in 70% or above on formative assessments & homework completion  (Some weeks 39cent hamburgers McD)
